Lawrence Durrell, poet and writer, author of The Alexandria Quartet, satirist of diplomatic life in Esprit de Corps, car racer, jazz composer, sensualist and philosopher. Before he died in 1990 he chose Ian S. MacNiven, a New Yorker, to write about his life. Bookmark commissioned this film to coincide with the much-awaited publication of the first-ever authorised biography. The programme unveils a gallery of different aspects of Lawrence Durrell - as lover, husband and philosopher.
